5月の和名は「皐月」、そしてこの皐月は師走と並びとても現代でも親しまれている和名です。また5月生まれの女の子の名前でも人気があり、「となりのトトロ」に登場する姉妹の姉の名前も「サツキ」ですが、そして私はこの「となりのトトロ」2度目の鑑賞をこの皐月、5月にも鑑賞してきます！ 何といってもあの大きなトトロが登場する場面は圧巻で思わず胸がキュっとなったのを今も思い出します。
劇場の観客の殆どがNon-Japaneseの老若男女で、感激して涙する人が隣、あちこっちにいました。トトロが出現する瞬間に何だか心がポッと熱くなり癒されるのを感じたのは私だけではなかったようです。これぞまさに「となりのトトロ」ですね。
2025年3月からイギリス・ロンドンのウェストエンドで無期限ロングラン上演することが発表された。舞台『となりのトトロ』（My Neighbour Totoro）は映画で音楽を手掛けた作曲家の久石譲が発案し、日本テレビとイギリスのロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニー（RSC）が共同製作した作品です。
22年にロンドンのバービカン劇場で初演、23年11月から今年3月まで同劇場で再演され、原作の世界観を尊重した演出や久石譲の魅力的な音楽が観客の心をつかみ、何と全公演で完売、これまで29万人を動員したほか、英国演劇界で最も権威のあるローレンス・オリビエ賞で演出賞など最多6冠を獲得したのです。そしてこれから「となりのトトロ」が無限の長～い旅に出ることになりました～。是非チャンスがあれば劇場に足を運んで、隣にトトロがいるの実感してみてください。熱く～なるのでは、、、、
トトロちゃんに少し誌面を割いたので、簡単に5月の行事についてお話します。まず「五月晴れ」という言葉がありますが、何とも5月の澄んだ青空そして天高く舞う鯉のぼりをイメージしますが、本来は旧暦の5月の梅雨の合間の晴天のことを言うのであって、新暦の5月の晴れた日に使うのは誤りであるそうです。旧暦は新暦より1-２カ月ずれるので、6-7月のどんよりしたお天気の続く中、ふと見せる晴れ間をさす言葉だったのですね。しかし最近では、誤用とされる5月に使うことも許されているようです。
すがすがしい五月晴れに5月5日の端午の節句の鯉のぼりが揚々と上がる日本での景色は本当に気持ちが高揚してきますね。チャンスがあれば日本でまた見てみたいです。
個人的には、「筋肉は何才からでもついてくる～」を信じ 始めたウエイトトレーニングも2年になります。少しずつ強くなっていくのを感じたり、また後退したりと亀さんの歩みですが、それでもやはり「継続は力なり」を信じてこれからもジャーニーを続けていければと動いてくれる自分の身体に感謝の日々です。
イギリスの5月は肌寒い日もありますが、花々が公園、庭では咲き誇る、本当に素晴らしい季節の到来です。さあ、日中はできるだけ外の空気を吸い、綺麗な色とりどりの花をめでたいものですね。

The Japanese name for May is ‘Satsuki’, and this Satsuki is a very popular name in modern times, along with ‘Shiwasu’. The name of a girl born in May is also popular, and the name of the elder sister in ‘My neighbour Totoro’ is also ‘Satsuki’! The scene where the big Totoro appears is breath-taking and makes my heart beat faster and faster. Most of the audience in the theatre were non-Japanese, young and old, men and women, and there were many who were moved to tears. It seems I was not the only one who felt my heart warm and healed the moment I saw Totoro. (https://totoroshow.com/ ←link)
It was announced that the show will run indefinitely long in the West End of London, UK, from March 2025.
My Neighbour Totoro was conceived by composer Joe Hisaishi, who also wrote the music for the film, and co-produced by NTV and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in the UK. It was performed again at the Barbican Theatre in London from November 2011 to March this year. The production respected the worldview of the original work and the attractive music by Joe Hisaishi, and it won the hearts of audiences, selling out every performance, attracting 290,000 people to date and winning a total of six Laurence Olivier Awards, the most prestigious in the UK theatre world, including Best Direction. And now ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ is about to embark on a long, endless journey!
Since I have devoted a little space to Totoro-chan, I would like to talk briefly about May’s events. The word ‘Satsuki-bare (五月晴れ)’ conjures up images of clear blue skies and carp streamers flying high in the sky in May, but originally it refers to the fine weather during the rainy season in May according to the lunar calendar, and it is said that it is wrong to use the word for the fine weather in May according to the new calendar. Since the lunar calendar is one to two months later than the new calendar, the term was originally used to refer to the sunny intervals during the continuing dreary weather of June and July. Recently, however, it seems to be allowed to be used in May, which is considered a misuse of the word.
It is really nice to see the carp streamers of the Boys’ Festival on 5 May rising in the refreshing May weather. If I had the chance, I would like to see it again in Japan.
Personally, I started weight training two years ago, believing that “you can develop muscle at any age.” I feel like I’m getting stronger, then I go back, but it’s like a turtle’s progress. Still, I believe in “persistence is power” and I’m grateful every day for my body that keeps moving, hoping to continue my journey ultimately.
May can be chilly in the UK, but the flowers are in bloom in the parks and gardens, and it’s really a wonderful time of year to be here. Now, I want to get out in the air as much as possible during the day and admire the beautiful, colourful flowers. So, enjoy the lovely ‘Satsuki’~.
