Access Appointments Saijiki Blog for November(Shimotsuki)2026
By Mitsue Finch Uchida
Hello everyone, with the start of winter time and the increasingly shorter daylight hours, I hope you are all doing well. There are only two months left in 2026, and I’m amazed at how quickly time flies. November is “Shimotsuki,” a month that marks the transition from autumn to winter, and is also a month filled with cultural events and traditional ceremonies. This time, let’s delve a little into the “Thanksgiving holidays” of Japan and the United States.
Japan’s “Labor Thanksgiving Day (November 23rd)” has its roots in the “Niiname-sai,” a court ritual that has continued since the Asuka period. It was a sacred harvest festival where the Emperor offered new grain to the gods and gave thanks for the harvest, but after the war, at the behest of GHQ, the religious aspects were removed, and it was reborn as the current “day to appreciate labor and celebrate production.” On the other hand, America’s “Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November)” originates from the history of the Pilgrim Fathers who emigrated from England in the 17th century. In the midst of harsh cold and hunger, they were saved by the local indigenous people. After learning cultivation and hunting, the settlers, who achieved a bountiful harvest the following autumn, invited the indigenous people to a feast to give thanks to God—this marked the beginning of the festival.
While Japan celebrates Thanksgiving as an extension of daily life, thanksgiving in America is a major event where families gather nationwide, much like New Year’s Day. A few years ago in New York, I experienced the city-wide parade and sales; it truly felt like a big festival. “Japan, where a traditional harvest festival transformed into a day to reward labor after the war,” and “America, where settlers celebrate the joy of surviving with the help of indigenous people.” Knowing the history reveals the reasons behind each country’s unique way of celebrating.
Incidentally, why do Americans eat turkey on this day, while in Britain it’s eaten at Christmas? I’ll discuss that mystery in December.
Why not make a warm pumpkin soup to express your gratitude for your daily hard work and the joy of being able to work? We’ve found the so-called “Hokkori Pumpkin” (a type of pumpkin commonly found in Japan) at M&S again this year, and it warms our hearts. Lidl also had some last year, but how about this year? We hope you all find your own favorite “treasures”. Have a wonderful November filled with warmth for both your heart and body.
