6月の和名「水無月」は「水の月」という意味で、田んぼに水を引く時期であったことから、そう呼ばれるようになったと言われています。そして紫陽花が咲き始め、雨が緑を濃く引き立たせるこの月。私の郷里島根で開発された「万華鏡」という鉢物のあじさいはあまたあるアジサイ品種の中でも、一目で多くの人の心を射止め、品種名と商品姿をばっちり覚えていらっしゃる方は多いのではないでしょうか。残念ながらロンドンの私の庭の紫陽花はまだ花が開いてくれません。待ち遠しいですーー。さて今月は日本の「二十四節季」を少し紐解いてみると、6月6日「芒種」：稲や麦など芒（のぎ＝穂の先端にある針のような突起）のある穀物の種をまく時期のことです。でも現代の種まきはこれよりずっと早い時期に行われるそうです。
6月11日「入梅」（雑節）：梅雨入りの目安を示す雑節でこの日から必ず梅雨入りをするわけではなく、あくまで目安です。きっと農家の田植えの時期を決めるために梅雨入りの時期を知る必要があり、昔は農暦として梅雨の目安を示し、現代のような気象予報がない時代の知恵ですね。6月21日「夏至」：イギリスではこの時期は陽が沈まず22時くらいにようやく暗くなるという状況ですが、日本はこの夏至の時期がちょうど梅雨のさなかで、天気が悪いことが多く、「昼が長い」と言われてもピンとこないことがありましたが、たまによく晴れた夏至の日であれば、なんと20時ごろ（西日本の場合）までほんのりと明るく、夕焼けが残る空を見ることがあったのを覚えています。
今月はスポーツたけなわの月、ウインブルドンは恒例ですが、FIFAワールドカップがカナダ・メキシコ・アメリカ合衆国で開催され、 日本と韓国による共同開催だった2002年大会以来24年ぶりの複数国開催で、しかも3カ国による共同開催は大会史上初だそうですね。何となく盛り上がりそうですが時差が気になりますね。14日は日本―オランダ、17日イングランド―クロアチア、既にヒートを感じる取り組みですね。応援しなければ！！
個人的には、フランスシャモニーで3000ｍのプラットフォームから、モンブランの山々を下に見ての7―77才まで可能と言われるパラグライディングに挑戦！！そして娘がモンブランの山4,809メートル（ヨーロッパアルプスの最高峰）登頂に挑戦した。と心臓がパクパクと早く脈打つのを感じる6月です。
さあ、みなさんも6月はイギリスの素晴らしい季節。屋外で何か挑戦してみませんかーー。
日本は梅雨の雨雫にキラキラと輝く草花の季節。それでは素敵な6月をお過ごしください。。。とここまで書いて、今月は私の幼友達がロンドンへやってきます。どのような珍道中になるのやら、楽しみ満載の月で～す。

Access Appointments Saijiki Blog for June（Minazuki）2026

The Japanese name for June “Minazuki” means “month of water,” and it is said to have been named because it was the time when water was drawn into the rice fields. This is also the month when hydrangeas begin to bloom, and the rain enhances the richness of the greenery. Among the many hydrangea varieties, the potted hydrangea called “Kaleidoscope,” developed in my hometown of Shimane, has captured the hearts of many at first sight, and I’m sure many people remember its name and appearance. Unfortunately, the hydrangeas in my London garden haven’t bloomed yet. I’m eagerly awaiting them…
Now, let’s delve a little into Japan’s “24 solar terms”. June 6th is “Bōshu,” the time to sow the seeds of grains with awns (needle-like projections at the tip of the ear), such as rice and wheat. However, modern sowing is apparently done much earlier. June 11th is “Nyūbai” (a miscellaneous seasonal division), a seasonal division indicating the start of the rainy season; it doesn’t necessarily mean the rainy season begins on this day, but is merely a guideline.
Surely, farmers needed to know when the rainy season began to determine the timing of rice planting, and in the past, the agricultural calendar indicated the rainy season as a guideline—a testament to the wisdom of a time before modern weather forecasts existed. June 21st is the summer solstice. In the UK, the sun doesn’t set until around 10 PM, but in Japan, the summer solstice falls right in the middle of the rainy season, often resulting in bad weather. While it’s true that the days are longer, I remember that on occasional clear summer solstice days, it would remain faintly light until around 8 PM (in western Japan), and we could see the lingering glow of the sunset.
This month there are many sports events. Wimbledon is a regular one, but the FIFA World Cup is being held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This is the first time in 24 years that the tournament has been held in multiple countries since the 2002 tournament co-hosted by Japan and South Korea, and it’s also the first time in the tournament’s history that it’s being co-hosted by three countries. Sounds like it’s going to be exciting, despite the time differences are a concern. My heart is beating fast, with Japan playing the Netherlands on the 14th and England playing Croatia on the 17th… I can already feel the heat in these matches! I have to cheer them on!!
Personally, I’m planning to try paragliding in Chamonix, France, from a 3000m platform, with the Mont Blanc mountains below—something said to be possible for people aged 7 to 77! And my daughter attempted to climb Mont Blanc, 4,809 meters (the highest peak in the European Alps). So, June is a wonderful time of year in the UK. Why not try something outdoors?
In Japan, it’s the rainy season, and the flowers sparkle in the raindrops. Have a wonderful June! And now that I’ve written all this, my childhood friend is coming to London this month. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of adventure it will be—it’s going to be a month full of fun!
